Immediately After the Surgery
Breast augmentation surgery is usually performed in an outpatient setting. Patients stay a couple of hours in the recovery room and then are able to return home the same day after the surgery. Patients may feel a bit tired for 24 - 48 hours after the surgery secondary to the anesthesia. Patients may also feel slightly sore from the surgery, but this soreness is relieved with pain medication prescribed to you by your plastic surgeon.

Care of the Surgical Site
After the surgery you will be wearing a surgical bra, ace wrap, or other form of dressing. You will keep this on until you are seen on your first post-operative visit. If non-dissolvable sutures were used in surgery, they will be removed in 7 to 10 days. Your breasts will be swollen after the surgery. However, this resolves with time. Your incisions may initially be raised, firm and pink in color. It may stay this way for several months, but usually softens and lightens-up with time.

Mammograms
For older patients, a baseline mammogram may be needed prior to the surgery. After having a breast augmentation performed, all patients can still have mammograms performed. A special technique will be used to displace the implants and allow for a better view of the breast tissue. Mammograms are performed according to the recommendations and guidelines of the American Cancer Society.
